Regé-Jean Page leaves Bridgerton
It’s official: we saw the last Duke of Hastings on Bridgerton.
Netflix (via Lady Whistledown) announced Friday that Regé-Jean Page won’t return as Simon Basset (Jonathan Bailey) in Season 2 in Finding a Bride. (Spoiler alert: his main squeeze of season two has been occupied!)
“Dear readers, while all eyes are on Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s search for a Viscountess, we say goodbye to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings,” said a tweet from Lady W. “We will miss Simon’s on-screen presence, but he will always be part of the Bridgerton family. “
Page’s leading actress Phoebe Dynevor will be back, however. “Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and offerings – more intrigue and romance than my readers can stand,” the message continued.
In an interview with Variety, Page confirmed that his Bridgerton engagement is only for one season. “One of the things that are different about it [romance] The genre is that the audience knows the arc is complete, ”he said. “You know this so you can put people in emotional knots knowing that we will come out and have the marriage and the baby.”
During an appearance on the Today show in January, showrunner Chris Van Dusen secured himself when asked if Page and Dynevor would be involved in season two. “I hope so,” he said. “You are the Duke and Duchess now, but in my eyes they will always be the Bridgertons, and I think they will always be a part of the show.”
Your grace, it’s been my pleasure. 💜🐝 pic.twitter.com/kX1nIG8pz7
